I use Vim, but I quickly remapped to the shift-lock key–doesn’t everybody? At least I know it’s a very popular change with Vimmers, and it makes it effortless to switch modes. Definitely speeds things up too–you don’t have to make that stretch, and you can keep your fingers on the home row.

I’m surprised to hear that I’m not the only person to use ^[ instead of ESC. I think it was a strange DEC keyboard that put ESC in completely the wrong place that got me out of the habit of using ESC.

Also, there’s a lot more than 3 modes in vim.

Thank you! But I still think it’s more convenient to press esc than to press ctrl+something, although esc is farer.
